Christmas is a few days away....I love Christmas its the best festival for me first on a religious level and then all the partying, family and friends....This year is the first time since I had my kids, we are not spending Christmas together, thank god for family in India and the kids having aunties, uncles and cousins to share the Christmas spirit with.
I sent them a box of goodies and some new clothes hoping it would get there in time for Christmas but so far nothing has arrived, so much for paying airmail charges, should have saved some money and just sent it by sea like I usually do, oh well 3 days to go before Christmas it may just land up...fingers crossed, makes me happier knowing they have some thing from us. I also sent them some money so hopefully they have fun.
Christmas eve is at our in laws place....I have managed to buy pressies but still have not bought the 2 nephews anything...what do you buy children who have everything. Well I have a few things in mind need to go buy them tomorrow, dont know why we wait for the 11th hour...
25th is lunch at ours but its not a big affair, like last year we are having an open house starting at 5.30 pm so this Christmas its more an adult thingy so I havnt asked the in laws over they dont drink anyways and thats what Im serving mostly...I have bought 8 liters of red wine to make Gluehwine and some finger food and hopefully its a great turn out like last year...
This year Im cooking Turkey again...I wasnt going to but a friend from Australia is spending Christmas with us and a few other friends will be coming over so I said what the heck lets keep with tradition, hubby has a colleague who sells Wild Boar and now we have a leg of wild boar, no idea how to cook it tho...I wanted to make some ham like thingy
The weather has been cold, snowing and minus degrees, Im not complaining because Im looking forward to a white Christmas.but after New Year I hope the weather gets better....
So.....a few weeks have passed....
24th was good, we managed to get to the the other end of Hamburg to my brother in laws house and since his wife is Polish and the one with tradition, we had fish like last year, starting with a cold fish soup, I know it sounds yuck but omg was so yummy, then we had pan fried fish, baked fish with grilled veggis and some fish cakes. Being Friday and its my no meat day I was happy.
No alcohol served which I still find odd, we drank coffee instead, that god awful brewed coffee, Im such a coffee snob just love my coffee machine and my nice Italian coffee :) Then we gave out the presents, to the kids they dont do adult presents, I did buy mother in law and father in law some clothes, was told off for buying them because they didn't get us anything...oh whatever I wanted to.
We chose to go to the church down the road from us this year for midnight mass, was nice and all in German, I loved the church and sat near all the lighted candles. I love the tradition of midnight mass and even though I didn't understand what they were saying I did feel the spirit. I prayed in English, the worst part was not being able to sing the hymns...I missed that part most. Oh well I should learn the prayers in German and the hymns because there is never mass in English here in Germany....for midnight mass at least.
We came home and exchanged gifts, hubby gave me white gold earrings and a cross, really pretty and I loved it...I gave him a GPS for the car, he moaned about why I needed to buy him an expensive present. Just be happy...seriously drives me crazy trying to buy him stuff. his birthday is coming up and he's already making hints as to what I should buy him...just in case I splurge again...
25th morning I woke up all set to cook but since my friend was spending Christmas with us she wanted to help out with some side dishes, well I'm not a morning person or someone who likes to share my kitchen and I could see the situation getting out of control, so I took a step back opened a bottle of wine and then things sorted it self out ...lol...Lunch was fab and every thing was smooth, till I burned my oven gloves. Bloody Clara was in the kitchen when they caught on fire and the kitchen is tiny , but she was oblivious to anything till the fire alarm went off and then panic...from me mostly...Drama over and we laughed at it...later!!
Lunch got over by 4.30ish and just went we finished dessert the bell rings, the dog is barking like an idiot like he does...and I ask who's that its only bloody 4.30pm...the first guests for the open house. I said clearly 5.30pm, hubby never gets it right or they cannot read...oh well no time to take a quick nap...back to the kitchen and start the Gluehwein, cooking the wild boar , making sausage rolls etc. I had help so all was good.
Alot of people showed up and we all had a fantastic evening, I missed the kids and must have called them like 4 times from the 24th. The spent theirs at my sisters, and everyone had a good day, they even got the box we sent before Christmas so they had their new clothes, cake ad cookies etc...I was pleased it all turned out well in the end. It didn't snow but I did get my white Christmas and a great group of people who made it special.
On that note...till next time
Tchuss!!
